After another mad few weeks/months/year, I’m taking some down time. But not before sharing the last project with @artcore_uk - Carbon Conscious Christmas 🎄

1 mad idea, 2 dedicated technicians, 3 bags of plastic, 4 sacks of discarded dec’s, 5 crazy saturdays, 6 dedicated participants, 7 crates of cardboard, 8 scrap acrylic icicles, 9 reels of wire, 10 metres of string, 11 bags of rubbish, and a 6ft Junk Sculpture wheeled through towwwwn! 🎅

I remember visiting this event last year as a member of the public and manifesting I would be exhibiting this year as an artist - and it all happened so quickly - and here I am - and I am so excited! 🤩

Visit Banks Mill during our winter Open Studios to meet myself and over 50 resident & affiliate artists, designers, makers and creative businesses.

As well as seeing first-hand how the artists create their unique designs and handmade products, you can also buy original work directly from the artists themselves, something that can’t be experienced on the high street.

Some of you may recognise show elements from the 2024 Nottingham season such as the kitchen door from The Children, and from seasons gone by such as Scrooge’s boxes from Christmas Carol and panto legs from the Playhouse infamous Dick Whittington.

Nearly all scenic elements have been borrowed, re-purposed or re-used to create this show.

Due to a future in which we assume fabric would be rationed, costume is completely repurposed from coffee sacks, hessian and other fabric offcuts, with characters adding their own individual thrifted items.

Defendants are stripped of their identity completely and pushed, barefoot, into a blinding spotlight to defend their climate-damaging decisions to the young jurors. Wearing rags of whatever green fabric the State has managed to salvage.

This was a quote very apt as I developed the set and costume for The Trials. As a designer specialising in sustainability, it was an honour to design Dawn King’s brilliant, timely play for Nottingham Playhouse.

The Trials is set in a not-so-distant future where our young people are putting the likes of every single one of us on trial for crimes against the environment which jeopardise their future.

During development, we looked at the history of theatres as deeply political structures within cities and their communities. As far back as ancient Rome, amphitheatres were used not only for theatre, but for religious festivals, military triumphs, and aristocratic funerals, all funded by the state.

Fast forward to the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020, and theatre spaces such as the Lowry and Birmingham Rep were being used as venues by the Ministry of Justice to host the back-log of court cases caused by the pandemic – quite literally ‘staging justice’.

In a future not unsimilar to the realities of 2020, our imagined State authorities have now commandeered the building in its abandoned state as a court room for our jury to deliberate the fate of their elders.

“Maria Terry’s design cleverly re-uses elements from other recent Playhouse productions to convey a public space – quite possibly the Playhouse itself – that has been repurposed for the trials now that its previous use has become obsolete.

Only at the brutal, devastating climax do we see scenic structures clearly built specifically for the show – their purpose serving to emphasise the serious regard in which this production holds its core message.“

“…opens with flickering lights, a howling siren, and a middle-aged man, dressed in a patchworked boiler suit, shoved into the glare of a spotlight to defend his life.

The concept of the play is simple: in the not-too-distant future on a ravaged Earth, the generation responsible for the climate crisis are being held accountable by the young people who must live with its inheritance.“

“Costumes are make-do-and-mend in the extreme: repurposed goods sacks and individual scavenged items. Again, it’s dystopian but completely recognisable.

It’s surely no coincidence that this reusing of set items and the largely local cast must make this one of the more sustainable productions the Playhouse has ever staged.”
